Luau Party Invitations Give Clues to Tropical Themes

You can easily clue guests into the theme of your Luau party with the style of invitations you choose to send out. People often think that it’s necessary to spell out every little detail of the party on their invitations. It is not, you can use the style of your wording the artwork on the invitations to clue in your guests about the party theme.
Only one word is really needed to describe this party theme on invitations anyway, Luau! Definitely put this at the top of the invitation you shouldn’t have any problems with guests inadvertently showing up in country western attire and expecting steak. Other good keywords that you can use sparsely throughout the invitation are; tropical, grass skirts optional, leis not included, Hawaiian, Palm Trees, and Aloha friends.

Artwork on invitations can be very easy and simple. You can even cut out the invitation in a cool tropical shape. Try making a simple pineapple shape or a grass skirt shape. For the grass skirt cutout invitation you can also cutout swatches of green construction paper and glue it in layers on the front of the invitation for the grass leaves. Take a fine marker and add the little details to the paper grass. If you aren’t so good with artsy cutouts buy and use bright colorful paper for your invitations in tropical colors like; bright greens, oranges, yellows and blues. Then let the wording of your invitation tell guests what to expect.
Don’t forget about the envelope that your invitation goes in. Often times the prettiest of invitations can show up in boring plain white envelopes. Add a few accents to the envelope so guests will be excited to see what’s inside. You can find stamps with tropical fruit shapes on them and apply a few well placed marks to the bottom front of the envelope or on the back flap.

Luaus are fun and funky. Luaus are loud and colourful. And your luau invitations should be the same. Grab your guest's imagination with the wild and whacky, but practicable, luau invitation ideas. Why so much attention to the invitation? Simple, in a number of other related articles we have identified that the use of a bold and creative party invitations helps to get your guests into the party spirit early creating a sense of excitement and intrigue, after all, if your invitations are this good the parties going be fantastic. Imaginative and novel invitations simply build on the expectation of the luau itself.
These invitations need not be too expensive and none take too long to create however in keeping with the old adage, the more time and energy you put in the more you get back by way of results.
Whatever invitation you end up selecting, there are several bits of information that you will need to provide. Simple really, a fantastic invitation can be ruined by the failure to include the right information. So what should you include? Let us start with one of the simplest ideas and prove that these ideas need not be expensive. Create your own unique customised invitation using your computer's document program and clip art graphics. Try out some font (character) styles. There are many websites offering free fonts which can be downloaded to your own computer. Print these onto a good quality paper or thin card and then make them funkier by adding fabric and tropical effects. For example if you have included a picture of a parrot, stick some small colourful feathers on it's tail or if you have a hula girl, use fabric over her skirt.
Use a message in a bottle themed invitation. Either using small glass bottles or alternatively purpose designed small plastic bottles into which you can drop your invitation and some sand or small beach pebbles. A cork stopper for the top and hey presto, instant luau invitation.
If you are going for a message in a bottle theme, it's good practise to roll the invitation so that the words can be seen/read through the bottle. After all, you want them to know its and invitation. If you really want to be sure, use a small strung label with he wording 'invitation inside' and attached under the stopper. And if you have chosen glass bottles, you could use sealing wax to finish the effect.
An additional idea for a really luxurious finish; why not use aged paper for the invitation? This is easy enough to create using a shallow dish and a weak tea solution. Let the paper soak in the dish and whilst it's still wet, flick a few instant coffee flakes onto the surface. These should dissolve creating slightly darker areas. You can crumple the paper and then let it dry flat. Instant aged paper which can be used in a number of invitation themes.
For an easier postal option, why not find a clip art of a suitcase onto which you can print a Hawaii label which can include your party's 'tag line'. Print this out onto a thin card and the cut it out to shape. Attach a card luggage label completed with all of the party details to the handle of the suitcase seal in an envelope and post.
Novelty sunglass themed invitations. Your local party shop will probably stock a range of novelty sunglasses shaped like coconuts, margarita glasses, palm trees etc. Again using a simple card luggage label with the information attached - along with the message that the guest will need the sunglasses on the day - parcel up and post.
As we are looking specifically at a luau theme, you need not feel restricted to sunglasses, why not send a colourful hair slide or shell necklace and bracelet or grass skirt or anything else that is readily identifiable with your chosen theme. A visit and stroll around your local party store will get your mind racing with the possibilities.

The Coconut Messenger; An Original Hawaiian Luau Invitation
Part of the fun when throwing a party is sending out the invitations and the anticipation of a great response. You will often find the more creative and interactive the luau invitation the more excited the guests will be. A well planned and thoughtful invitation tells the guests you are putting together an equally well thought out luau party to match and they will really want to be there.
There are many exciting ways to invite guests to a Hawaiian Luau, but here is one I think is quite original, I call it ‘The Coconut Messenger’. Now this one takes a bit of effort, and depending on where you live could also be a bit expensive, but they are certainly worth the extra effort if you want to impress on your guests how cool your Hawaiian Luau is going to be.
The idea is to deliver a whole coconut shell to your guests which must be opened to reveal the invitation hidden inside, the fun is in the opening of the coconut which can be quite a challenge if you don’t know how.
- As many coconuts as you have guests
- Coloured paper for the invitation
- Card stock or paper for the instructions
- Rafia or twine
- A screw driver, corkscrew or hammer and nail
- Laminating machine if possible
First let’s make the invite, keep it simple such as a handwritten note, or printed paper using a cool font. Parchment would add a nice touch too.
Once you have created the invitation if you have a laminating machine handy then laminate it as this will protect it, but if not just roll the invite into a tight scroll and wrap in plastic wrap ready to be inserted into the fresh coconut.
Usually a coconut is opened simply by giving it one hard knock in the exact right spot, at which time the coconut simply falls apart into two almost perfect halves. But for the purpose of this exercise we will need to drain the coconut water first as we are going to insert the invitation into the coconut and deliver it unopened
To drain the water you will need to open one of the eyes, the three spot found on one end of the coconut. You can do this using a hammer and clean nail, a screw-driver or corkscrew. Make sure one of the eyes is opened wide enough for you to insert the invitation scroll.
Now place the coconut over a glass and allow the water to drain, to make it drain faster you can make a hole in the tail end too. Now let the kids drink the water, it is delicious and good for you, and is nice when chilled. When you are satisfied the coconut has been drained long enough you can insert the invitation.
Now for the tricky part, opening the coconut:
Now, being married to a pacific islander gives me the benefit of knowing the secrets to opening a coconut with out sending shards of shell flying in all directions, but this is still a job for grown ups okay.
Your guests will need instructions on cracking open the coconut, after all, opening a coconut when you don't know how can be a tad difficult, so your instructions could read like this:
I am the Coconut Messenger! I have two eyes, a mouth and a tail, and, I have a message inside...Open me!
Hold me in your hand with your thumb on my mouth and my tail facing the tip of your fingers...turn me around till you find my back, an obvious line. Now give me a good hard whack right on my back with a hammer and I will open to reveal my message to you!
Attach the note to the coconut with a piece of twine or raffia and leave on their doorstep. Fun huh!
