Planning a Hawaiian Luau
There are few themed parties that are easier to pull off, yet more are fun, than a Hawaiian luau. With a little imagination and effort you can assemble a tropical atmosphere right in your own backyard.
A good place to start is with a few tiki torches. These are usually available at your local building supply or patio store, are relatively inexpensive, and give great ambiance to your party location. Party stores are a good place to locate some of the other accoutrements that add to the authenticity of your Hawaiian luau. If it is an indoor party you can replace the tiki torches with oriental lanterns to give your party venue the island feel.
Faux grass embellishments for around your serving table, or bar, set the mood along with strands of silk or fresh flowers lining the perimeter of your party area. If you have the space, a fire pit gives off a friendly glow but make sure you keep it at a safe distance from the decorations.
Your Hawaiian luau menu is easily constructed using fresh fruits and vegetables. Plenty of pineapples and mangoes as well as coconuts, oranges, and grapefruits not only provide healthy eating alternatives but add to the festive look of your overall table presentation.
As the main course a ham is appropriate and harkens to the authentic luau fare of a pig roasted in a pit. You can also serve smoked salmon with orange and lemon garnish as an appetizer adding even more island flavor to your festivities. Beverages can be brought into the theme with tropical drinks festooned with fresh fruit and umbrellas served in tall glasses, or if you really want to go all out, coconut shells.
Food and drink is a big part of the party plan but it doesn't stop there. All your guests should be encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts to add to the fun. For the adventurous, grass skirts and coconut tops can really bring the ambiance of Hawaii to your luau. For your less adventurous friends there are always the more conservative leis that even the stodgiest of attendees will wear and still make them part of the island themed fun.
You can supply either silk of fresh hibiscus for the female guests to wear behind their left ear, if married, or right ear, if single. Though some insist this tradition is a fabrication of the Hawaiian tourism bureau it makes for a nice romantic island touch.
Finally, one of the most important aspects of a luau is the music and activities. Pre-recorded Hawaiian music is readily available in local stores as well as on-line. It really sets the mood and ties all of your other elements together to capture the flavor of the islands. You may even consider purchasing a ukulele or bongos and have some added fun playing live music. Anyone can play the bongos and it doesn't really matter if they are good at it or not, but it helps.
Activities for Hawaiian luau parties can be as simple as doing a conga line or a limbo contest, or you can actually hire a professional to come to your event and demonstrate a real hula dance. They can even teach all of the guests the basics of how to hula dance, which can be very fun and entertaining. Typically, if it is a large group, they will split the men and women up to teach them their parts separately, then have everyone come together and combine the parts to make the full dance.
Hawaiian luau themed parties are a great way to celebrate any occasion, whether it is during the summer while enjoying the great outdoor weather, or even when it is cold outside, if you just want to chase the winter blues away indoors.
