You can easily clue guests into the theme of your Luau party with the style of invitations you choose to send out. People often think that it’s necessary to spell out every little detail of the party on their invitations. It is not, you can use the style of your wording the artwork on the invitations to clue in your guests about the party theme.
Only one word is really needed to describe this party theme on invitations anyway, Luau! Definitely put this at the top of the invitation you shouldn’t have any problems with guests inadvertently showing up in country western attire and expecting steak. Other good keywords that you can use sparsely throughout the invitation are; tropical, grass skirts optional, leis not included, Hawaiian, Palm Trees, and Aloha friends.

Artwork on invitations can be very easy and simple. You can even cut out the invitation in a cool tropical shape. Try making a simple pineapple shape or a grass skirt shape. For the grass skirt cutout invitation you can also cutout swatches of green construction paper and glue it in layers on the front of the invitation for the grass leaves. Take a fine marker and add the little details to the paper grass. If you aren’t so good with artsy cutouts buy and use bright colorful paper for your invitations in tropical colors like; bright greens, oranges, yellows and blues. Then let the wording of your invitation tell guests what to expect.
Don’t forget about the envelope that your invitation goes in. Often times the prettiest of invitations can show up in boring plain white envelopes. Add a few accents to the envelope so guests will be excited to see what’s inside. You can find stamps with tropical fruit shapes on them and apply a few well placed marks to the bottom front of the envelope or on the back flap.

One of the most important aspects of any tiki party or luau is the food. Your inspiration for tiki party food should come from the tropical environment of the islands. Serve all of your food and drinks at a tiki bar for ambience.
One of the easiest ways to serve the food is to make a platter of fruit kabobs. Use tropical fruits like melons and pineapple. These will perfectly complement fruity drinks and sweet meats, such as ham, barbecued pork, or grilled chicken. Marinate the meat in barbecue, teriyaki, or sweet and sour sauce before cooking. Seafood, especially shrimp, is always popular at tiki parties. If you can find it, mahi-mahi fish would be an appropriate entrée at your party.
For your tropical party, any number of tropically-inspired foods will complete the island feeling. Though a pig roast would be traditional at a luau, it can be complicated, and you may not have the space for it. Though many Polynesian or traditional tiki foods require special ingredients, it is entirely possible to have an island-inspired feast with unique twists on ordinary foods. Barbecuing hotdogs or hamburgers will ruin the tropical ambience, but chicken, beef satay, or seafood will continue your party theme. When barbecuing tiki food, be sure to move the grill away from your decorations; many tiki decorations, such as grass skirts, are flammable.
Tiki party food is often very creative, and this creativity should continue with the way the food is served. For example, serve a fruit salad in a hollowed out watermelon, or use the various foods of your buffet to create a display of shapes or figures. Bamboo skewers and toothpick umbrellas can also be used in your party fare display.
Many traditional 'tiki party' foods are actually popular cocktail party fare from the 1950's and 1960's, when tiki culture became wildly popular in many circles. One unique dish often served at such parties was a sauce combining brown mustard and blackberry jelly, heated over low heat. The mixture becomes a thick sauce in a few hours, and is served with li'l smokies sausages. In fact, cocktail weenies served a central part of many 1960's cocktail parties, not just tropical parties. Many other foods served with toothpicks were also seen at these 1960's tiki parties.
Before planning your party menu, consider the environment you want. Do you want a party that feels authentic, or do you want to draw inspiration from kitschy 1960's tiki culture? If you plan to have a vintage-inspired party, consider finding a 1960's cookbook with tiki-inspired recipes, featuring unusual and often surprising flavor combinations.
After you've planned your menu, don't forget tiki drinks. These are just as important as, if not more important than, the food you plan to serve at your tropical party. Fruit punch and mai-tais are classic tiki drinks that are easy to make. Don't forget dessert; anything with pineapple or coconut will do. Pineapple upside down cake and coconut cream pie are just two of the tropical desserts you can serve at your tiki party.

A Hawaiian luau is a fairly festive event, mostly famous for ham and pineapples. It's not hard to see why you've chosen to hold one. Now, all you need is some kind of crafting project to tide over the guests while the food finishes cooking.
One of the easiest craft projects for a festive party like this is to make a beaded necklace, so I'd recommend making Hawaiian leis. The ingredients are fairly easy to come by, virtually any crafting store that you come across is going to have more than enough beads and string for any number of guests and designs that you could come up with. Although you could always go the traditional style and use flowers to make yours.
Now the method for making these is quite simple, first you'll need to come up with the design for your lei. Such as color scheme, number of small beads to large beads, if you intend to use flowers, etc. Alternatively, it can sometimes be fun to just make it up as you go along; nothing says you have to have a plan.
You'll want to make sure that your string for the lei is long enough to go around your neck and still have plenty of leeway for tying together at the ends. Finally you simply string the beads together and tie the ends of the tread together, you may want to use some glue to either hold the last beads in place or to hold the knot on the string together. Otherwise there is a chance the beads will go flying everywhere if the knot comes undone.
If you want to use some flowers, you'll need to put a hole through them to string them together. However, you should remember that unless you use dried flowers, they will wither and die on the lei. "

My daughter Maggie (age 6) wanted to get in on the current luau craze by having a hula girl birthday party. The fact that her birthday is in late November made me hesitate but I love a good birthday party challenge so we went for it anyway. Follow the steps below and you can have a hip-Hawaiian-bash any time of the year.
Step 1: Activities
We started by planning a craft; hula skirts. Armed with a about $20 and an idea we went to the craft store to find streamers, flowers, and ribbon. The ribbon was cut into strips long enough to fit around a child’s waist (with room to tie). Next, we took 1 roll of green and 1 roll of yellow crepe streamers and cut them into 2 ft strips.
When the kids arrived they simply grabbed some streamer strips and taped them to a piece of ribbon. Next they took a few small faux flowers and used double sided tape to stick them to the ribbon as well. Viola, a grass skirt is born.
Step 2: Games
Rummaging through our CDs we were able to put together a mix of upbeat tropical tunes. If you want to save time there are plenty of Luau CDs for sale at party stores and on the internet. I was trying to stick to a tight budget so we used our own music and the CD burner on my computer. This music mix became the base for most of our party games.
My daughter was in charge of the limbo stick. She decorated a piece of PVC pipe from the hardware store using stickers and more streamers. My 4 year old got involved as well and it really turned out great!
Once the craft was completed we turned on the tropical tunes and had a game of Freeze Hula Dance. That was followed by several rounds of Limbo. The kids enjoyed this so much we almost ran out of prizes. Then we put the music back on and had hula hoop contests. My goal: keep them moving!
Step 3: Food, Glorious Food
Is there anything more satisfying than turning off the lights and watching all those little eyes sparkle as they stare at the birthday cake? I know the cake was a deal-breaker when I was a kid so the pressure was on to come with something great.
My idea was to adapt the classic doll cake and make her into a Hawaiian beauty. I didn’t want to purchase a special doll-cake mold so I used a 2 quart Pyrex bowl instead. A bundt pan would be another possibility. I used a doll pick (upper body only) from a craft store for my hula girl; much easier than trying to shove Barbie’s legs into a cake or even worse…amputate them.
The next step was to decorate the cake with green frosting and drag a fork down the frosting to make it look like a wavy grass skirt. Flower shaped candies were placed around the waistline and a small silk flower was pinned to the doll’s hair. I made a delicious bikini top out of fruit leather and then sprinkled crushed graham crackers onto the platter to look like sand.
Mission accomplished. My daughter’s party was a huge success and we didn’t break the bank to do it. Everyone had a blast and the cake was definitely the highlight of the whole event. In the end I think you have as much fun getting ready for the party as you have during the party!
